This opera by Rossini has a symmetry with the Barber of Seville, composed a year earlier. It has a simple and humorous libretto with a highly refined and complex music. The scenarios, a decaying castle and a castle of crystal, were based on drawings by Giuseppe Galli, designer of the eighteenth century that made imaginary projects with unrealistic perspectives. This caused an interesting strangeness for the visual effect for the show.
